Brain Child is the website for The Children’s Neurosurgical Centre(CNC) based at Childrens Health Ireland(CHI) at Temple St . The CNC  is a national center for excellence providing care to any child in Ireland from 0-16yrs who requires neurosurgical care. Neurosurgery is the medical speciality concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders or trauma which affect the brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves and extra cranial cerebrovascular system. 

Approximately 700 neurosurgical admissions and more than 550 neurosurgical procedures are carried out annually. Activity levels are among the highest across the paediatric neurosurgical centers in Ireland and the UK. Approximately 64% of surgeries are carried out as emergency or urgent scheduled cases.

On average 1400 children are seen in the neurosurgical outpatients clinic every year. Urgent referrals are seen on the same day and we aim to see new referrals for outpatient review within 4 weeks. The CNC provides care for our patients in collaboration with the other clinical specialities at CHI at Temple St, with our colleagues across CHI and in Beaumont Hospital, St Luke’s Hospital Radiotherapy Services, the Central Remedial Clinic, Clontarf and the National Maternity Hospital, Holles St.

We are continuously working to build and strengthen our networks across paediatric services nationally, in both acute and community settings to improve the healthcare journey of each of our patients and their families.
